Tree Care

CARING FOR YOUR TREE

1.    If it has not been re-cut at our farm,  Cut about 1"-2" inches off the bottom of the tree before bringing it into the house. DO NOT remove the bark.  The bark of the tree is how your tree drinks water.

Removing the bark to fit a stand will destroy the tree's ability to drink water!

2.     Store your tree upright in a water-bearing stand    (the more water in a tree stand,  the better).

Use HOT TAP  water (150f) initially. It  will increase water absorption by as
much as 50%. (It is not necessary to add any additives. Do not use sugar)

Be sure to keep tree watered DAILY for the FIRST 10 DAYS

3.     Not putting your tree up right away?

Keep your tree in a cool sheltered area or garage, in a bucket of warm water and  away from heavy snow or                    wintry elements until you are ready to bring it inside.

Keep your tree in a bucket  full of water until you are ready to bring it inside. Be sure to check the water DAILY for         the first week. Your tree will drink lots of water, especially in the first few days of arriving home.

4.     Whether you put your tree up right away or store it in your garage or outside, your tree needs water. It will drink up to a  gallon or more of water per  day for the first week.

Make sure the water level does not drop below the fresh    cut base or a partial seal will form and reduce additional water absorption.  If this happens, use very hot tap water to soften the seal.

5.     Place the tree away from all heat sources. Avoid positioning near heat ducts or
radiators. Turn off the lights when leaving home or going to bed.

6.     A properly watered, fresh-cut tree is almost impossible to ignite contrary to popular opinion. However, use common sense and be sure all lights are in good condition and avoid combustible decorations.

7.     Uses after the Holidays: After the holidays consider moving your tree to the backyard area and hang suet and bird food products throughout the winter. Use branches as mulch in your garden or landscaping. Many Massachusetts city/town recycling centers. To locate a site near you:
